If you plan to convert a refrigerator to a keg box with the idea of saving some money, here are a few things to consider:
1. Most compact refrigerators have their condenser coils (the tubing that carries away the heat from the refrigerator) embedded within the cabinet walls where the insulation is. Before you try to install a conversion kit, make sure you know where the condenser coil tubing is located. Otherwise you could puncture the tubing (while drilling the entrance hole needed for the beer line) and lose the refrigerant gas.
2. You may void the manufacturer's warranty by modifying the refrigerator.
3. Lower priced refrigerators are NOT designed to be built-in or enclosed. This is because they have no fan to circulate the air required to keep the condenser coil cool and prevent the compressor (the pump that circulates the refrigerant) from overheating.
4. A compact refrigerator large enough inside to fit a half keg of beer (and the beer hose coupler) will cost about $550. An average conversion kit with the tower and CO2 tank will be another $250. Ready-to-use Kegerators that will dispense half kegs of your favorite beer start at about $650.
