Bar-Planner FAQs and Facts
Is Bar-Planner a program?
No, Bar-Planner is not a program. It consists of a complete set of drawings along with a powerful spreadsheet (.xls) file that you use to generate customized materials and cutting lists for your bar and back bar plan. You can also us our 3D color models if you download Google SketchUp (Free CAD software for designing your bar room layout.)
What is a spreadsheet file?
A spreadsheet file is a computerized ledger sheet. It consists of a grid made from columns and rows in an environment that makes number manipulation easy. The advantage of using computerized spreadsheets is their ability to update data and perform automatic calculations extremely quickly. When you enter the specifics for your bar, the Bar-Planner spreadsheet automatically calculates all cutting sizes and the amounts of materials and hardware you will need.

Do I have to know how to use spreadsheet software?
No. You only need to enter the variables (lengths and quantities of the sections) for your bar room layout into the spreadsheet file. All calculations and predetermined data are already contained in the spreadsheet and are "locked in" so that you cannot accidentally change or delete them.
What software do I need to use the Materials and Cutting list generator tool?
You need to have Excel 2000 (or a newer version) installed on your IBM PC computer.
Does the spreadsheet calculate the cost to build the bar?
Yes. You can enter current costs for whatever species of lumber you choose for your bar, or update the costs that are listed.
Where do I get the lumber to build the bar?
All lumber is specified in USA standard dimension lumber sizes and standard 4' x 8' sheet sizes. This type of lumber is readily available at your local "Home Center" store.
Where do I get the hardware I'll need?
All hardware specified is generally available at your local "Home Center" store. We also provide online sources for all hardware except for nails, screws and bolts.

Before I buy Bar-Planner, how will I know how much my bar will cost to build?
The actual cost will depend on the size and type of layout you plan, and the species of lumber you intend to use. The rule of thumb is to figure $50-60 per lineal foot of bar and back bar when using Red Oak & Oak hardwood plywood. Oak is about "middle of the road" economically speaking, so compare this to the cost of a custom built or pre-built bar.
What tools and equipment will I need?
You will need to have access to a table saw, a portable router with 3/8" cove and round-over bits, a pocket hole jig set and an electric drill. A dado cutter is helpful, but not necessary. Since most of the parts can be cut from standard dimensional lumber, a power miter saw will speed up the job, but again is not necessary. You will need some basic hand tools to assemble your bar such as a hammer, a power screwdriver and some clamps.

I am a novice when it comes to woodworking. Will I be able to use Bar-Planner?
Bar-Planner is designed for the novice. As long as you know how to operate your equipment in a safe manner, you should have no problems. If you need help interpreting the information in the plans (or the spreadsheet) contact us and we will happy to help.
Can I put a brass foot rail around the base of the bar instead of the wooden step?
Yes. You will need to omit the foot rest parts from the cutting lists and lengthen the vertical trim pieces on the front of the bar to accept the foot rail brackets.
